Urinary tract infection (UTI) not only affects humans; it affects animals, too. Dogs are especially susceptible to UTI and like humans they may feel intense discomfort once the infection has taken hold of their system.
How does urinary tract infection dog happen? Urinary tract infection usually happen when bacteria have gained access to the inner urinary system. Typically, bacteria can enter the pet's urethra through its urinary orifices but they can also penetrate the animal's urinary system through the food it eats and the water it drinks daily. Since female dogs have smaller urethra than their male counterparts, they are more susceptible to UTI. The small urethra makes it easier for bacteria to climb and gain access into the inner part of the urinary system. When not curbed, bacteria can accumulate and cause inflammation and infection.

Often, urinary tract infection in a dog may not be easily detected by the owner. Thus, when taken to the vet for inspection and medical attention, the animal may already be suffering from an advanced stage of the infection.
The first thing that the vet may do when a dog is brought to him for diagnosis is to ask the owner of what might be the problem. The owner, if possible, should be able to give the vet a detailed account of what has prompted the owner to take the pet to the vet. A precise account of the symptoms noticed in the animal can help the vet perform the exact medical procedures to come up with proper diagnoses.
When urinary tract infection is ruled out by the vet as the main reason for the dog's discomforts, the vet will likely give the pet antibiotics. For years, antibiotics have been used to treat urinary problems in pets. The kind of antibiotics that is given to the animal will be dependent on the type of bacteria that have caused the infection. These antibiotics may include Amoxicillin, Enrofloxacin, Ampicillin, Tetracycline, and Nitrofurantoin. In case of recurrence of the infection, the course of the antibiotics may be repeated.
If the vet has discovered that the urinary tract infection is not caused by bacteria but by fungal infection, the vet may prescribe antifungal medications. Antifungal medications are rarely used to treat canine UTI because fungus is rarely the cause of UTI. When used, this medication is usually performed with another form of treatment which is intended to remove any contributory factor to the problem.
Another form of treatment for canine urinary infection is the use of homeopathic remedies. This kind of treatment is best used both for first time occurrence of UTI and for recurrence of the infection. Homeopathic remedies which are believed to really effect a wonderful improvement on health conditions are those which contain Cantharis, Uva ursi, and Staphysagris. These ingredients have properties which can help soothe the animal's bladder, maintain its urine pH level, and strengthens its immune system, leading to its overall good health.
